Yuccas vary in their growth
habit, with some featuring a single short trunk, some
with branching trunks, and some that branch out at
ground level. They have large rosettes of narrow, stiff,
strap- to sword-shaped leaves. The flower spikes develop
quickly and can tower over the foliage. In spring or
summer, they bear pendulous bell- to cup-shaped white or
greenish-cream flowers that are sometimes tinted with
pink or purple.
Yuccas need a bright sunny position if they are to
flower well. They generally prefer a light well-drained
soil, but can tolerate poor soils. Hardiness varies with
the species, some will tolerate light frost, and they
are generally drought tolerant. Routine maintenance
includes a monthly feed, and careful watering. Propagate
from suckers, root cuttings, or seed.
